Duchess of Wellington born.

Thursday, 14 January 1773

On the 14th of January 1773 in Dublin Catherine Sarah Dorothea was born to Edward and Catherine Pakenham. She was always to be known as Kitty.
An engagement with a party loving, fiddle playing staff officer at Dublin castle was discouraged by her family as the young man had few prospects and little money. Even his mother called him 'Ugly Arthur'. When the couple married some 10 years later there were no objections to Sir Arthur Wellesley.
The couple had two sons but although Kitty loved her husband it seems that he only 'tolerated' her. Most of their married life was spent living either apart or in seperate parts of the house.
